Enterprise AI programs are beginning to acquire a deceptively simple readiness metric: How much company data can an agent access? It is easy to report and easy to benchmark. It is also too weak to carry the decision executives increasingly want it to carry.

An August 2026 MIT Technology Review Insights report, sponsored by Google Cloud and described by MIT Technology Review Insights as editorially independent, provides one market signal behind this question. Its global survey covered 300 senior data and technology leaders. The report identifies a 25-organization “data leader” cohort whose AI systems could access more than 70% of enterprise data and reports stronger agent outcomes among that group.1 Those associations are useful evidence that constrained data environments can inhibit AI. They do not establish that increasing estate-access percentage causes better agent decisions.
